Bruce Porterfield was a factory worker in Lansing, Michigan, when he read in a newspaper of the martyr death in 1944 of five missisonaries in the "Green Hell" of Bolivia. At once he knew where his true lifework lay. After months of missisonary training he deliverately chose to be sent to Bolivia. After numerous tribulations such as treking across endless alligator-infested swamps, being temporarily paralyzed by mysterious poisonous grass and being constantly endangered by poisonous snakes, scorpions and tarantulas, Porterfield considered himself rewarded when he was finally instrumental in saving the lives of two missionary families. Porterfield was among the brave band of missionaries who hurried to another part of Bolivia to stop the bloodshed, and bring the Gospel to killer-savages.
